Vera Wang Black Wedding Dresses

Vera Wang black wedding dresses

“And the bride wore… [record scratch] BLACK!”
I can hear it now, from jealous siblings and unrecognizable family that you never really wanted to invite to the wedding anyway. “I always knew there was something wrong with THAT side of the family, etc. etc. etc.” However when the queen of wedding gown design comes at you with a storm of black wedding dresses, the fashion world pays attention. As do fashion savvy brides to be.

For Fall 2012, Vera Wang has decided to play on the thought that black at a wedding is inappropriate and uncustomary. What a better way to raise interest and excitement than to have the word “Witchcraft” in the show notes? Correction: What a better way to raise interest and excitement AT A BRIDAL COUTURE SHOW than to have the word “Witchcraft” in the show notes? Either way the dresses were spectacular and I’m sure a pleasure to sew for Mrs. Wang’s team. Sewing with white is all fun and dandy (not to mention easier on the eyes) but black is just so… strong and independent.

Vera Wang was quoted as saying

“I found black to be fresh and tongue in cheek. With all the big weddings that happened this year, it was fun to step out of the box. I did take it to a witchy kind of place. For me, it helped build a sense of mystery that I was hungry for. And it added this sensuality and sexuality, and a little bit of severity, too.”

It is interesting that mystery is what Wang hungered for… I think white at a wedding is the very meaning of mystery. It’s a mystery that young virgin brides still cling to the tradition of wearing her hymen on her sleeve. That’s the mystery!

Personally I love the black dresses! They are a solid nod to individuality and strength of character, all while performing one of the most over-killed ceremonies on Earth. Though I personally am very happily married and respect the tradition, I feel as though these dresses don’t fall in line with what “marriage” has become ([cough] 40% divorce rate). Instead these dresses say “I do not fall under that category and this is for love!” Or it was just because your Mother-in-Law to be, said she wanted to wear white… so instead of dealing with a messy murder/suicide scenario you politely chose black for the dress.

Either way, you’ll look great the day of!

I agree! But it may send the wrong message like the bride “wears the pants” kind of message.
